A very interesting documentary that was released in 2004 about the recording of ”Say You Will”, Fleetwood Mac’s first album in over 15 years and it is their 17th album in total.

The album was released in 2003 and peaked in the top 3 in the US. A limited edition of the album was also released, including two live tracks, two studio tracks and a Bob Dylan cover. The documentary is the ‘making of’ the album and it is very raw, honest and fascinating, with lots of drama and gives a dood insight on what’s involved in album making.

Four Horsemen is a very interesting 2012 documentary directed by Ross Ashcroft. Ignorance is bliss as they say, the film criticises our overall system, Neo-classical economics and It explains what happened during the banking crisis and the general economical crisis that followed it. Banking and debt based economy, political lobbying, terrorism as a means of profit and suggests solutions to the problem like returning to classical economics and the gold standard. You’ll see some familiar faces interviewed such as Joseph StiglitzNoam ChomskyJohn Perkins, Herman Daly and Max Keiser.

In total, twenty-three international thinkers explain to us how the world really works and propose a few solutions in re-establishing a moral and just society.

As Frank Zappa once said:

“The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it’s profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.”

Smells Like Teen Spirit – The Song And Its Story

A song that redifined rock music sealing off the heavy metal/hair band era by opening up what we now know as alternative rock to the general public. Smells Like Teen Spirit was a deodorant back in the 90s. Kathleen Hanna from the band Bikini Kill gave the idea for the title when she sprayed on Kurt’s wall ”Kurt smells like teen spirit” after a drinking session. Hanna wanted to say that Kurt was marked with her scent but Kurt did not actually know that this was the name of a deodorant.

During a Rolling Stone interview in the 90s Kurt said ”…I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band—or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard…” what he basically meant was that he got inspired by the Pixies loud/aggressive section followed by a softer part this is not ripping off!!! Cobain said he wrote this song because he was feeling “disgusted with my generation’s apathy, and with my own apathy and spinelessness.” This feeling of detachment is what led to lyrics like “Oh well, whatever, nevermind.” Krist Novoselic added: “Kurt really despised the mainstream. My guess is that Cobain must had been astonished and dissapointed at the same time with the song’s success. His song became a critical and commercial success although Kurt despised mainstream. eventually grew uncomfortable with Smells Like Teen Spirit’s success and sometimes refused to play it live. For a sensitive personality this can be a devastating blow (and it was) but to be honest? He inspired a whole generation of musicians to come.

The song was recorded at Sound City studios California with Butch Vig, where he suggested some arrangement changes like shortening the chorus length and adding a guitar ad lib to it. The band recorded three takes of the song and Butch decided to keep the second one, and Kurt recorded four takes but the first three were the main ones.

In the beginning, MTV refused to play the video. When they finally accepted, it went on air on their alternative show 120 Minutes.

Nirvana Video shoot Smells like teen spirit

The music video was shot at Culver City studios California on the 17th of August 1991 directed by Samuel Bayer and the session was 12 hours long starting at noon.nirvana-flyer casting call for the video shoot of smells like teen spiritThe video was based on a ”school concert” scenario which ends up in anarchy and chaos.

The band handed out these flyers the day before the shoot at their concert and The ”extras” were kids that volunteered to appear in the video to help out the band but at least they got the opportunity to destroy the whole set and the band’s gear which gave a nice touch to the end of the video for sure! Cobain convinced Samuel Bayer to allow the kids to mosh, and the set became a scene of chaos.

The cheerleaders were recruited from a local strip club. Initially, the idea was to have the members of L7 to play the cheerleaders but it didn’t work out, or Kurt’s idea to oversized girls to play the role.Cheerleaders in Smells like teen spirit

The strip club cheerleaders ended up wearing black dresses with the Circle-A anarchist symbol. Awesome.

The line “Here we are now, entertain us” was something Cobain used to say when he entered a party.
